Creation Tools
04/17/16

There are many tools out on the market that you can use when you create your materials. When I talk tools I am not talking about MS Word or Powerpoint. I am talking about the capture tools and the editing tools. The tools you use can make a world of difference in the outcome of the project.

Let's start first with the capture tools. There are two types of capture tools that I use when creating materials. It depends on whether I am creating Instructor Led Training (ILT) or Web Based Training (WBT). The tool that I have used most of my teaching life for static capture of images and screen shots is Snagit. Snagit is a product from www.techsmith.com . They have evolved over the years to include dynamic capture with both their Snagit tool as well as their Camtasia product. More on dynamic capture later. The reason I like using Snagit is because of the various preferences it allows me to alter; Do I want the mouse in the capture or not. Do I want to delay the capture to allow the screen time to perform an action before I capture it. And, the ease of setting hot keys to perform multiple functions is very handy. One of the best things that I have done as an instructor that goes to customer sites is install Snagit on one of my thumbdrives. That way, if a customer has an issue during training I can take a screen capture very easily.

Now let's talk dynamic capture. When I say dynamic I am talking about real time action on the screen. Over the years I have created many WBT offerings for customers all over the globe. When it comes down to the tools necessary to create web based training material from start to finish, the one tool that I stand by is Adobe Captivate . The tools that Captivate brings to the table and its ease of use make working with the software actually enjoyable. Whether you are creating material that the user just has to watch or it is material that is interactive with tests that the user has to take to complete sections, Captivate has the tools to do it all.

When it comes down to creating my material, if it is ILT, I use MS Word. I like Word because it allows me to output in different formats depending upon customer needs and I can easily create a presentation by outputing to Powerpoint. But hands down, I don't go anywhere without my Snagit.

Thank you for taking the time to read my BLOG. I hope you found it useful and that you come back next week for more. If you missed any of my BLOGS you can catch up on the PREVIOUS BLOGS page.
